Christmas Smile Bowl-A-Thon

Jesus Time Lesson Plan for Sunday, October 10, 2010

Scripture Passage: Luke 17:11-19

Purpose of Jesus Time:
During Jesus Time, the children will learn that it’s important to feel good about small successes.

Jesus Time Thesis:
We’ll be happier when we’re able to appreciate small successes.

Goals for Jesus Time:
1. The children will understand the passage from Luke.
2. The children will retell the story by drawing pictures.

Materials Needed:
Prepared paper
Crayons/markers

Preparation:
Before Jesus Time!, the leaders should gather their materials, read Luke 17:11-19, and read through this lesson plan.

Procedure:
Gathering - When the children enter the space, have them sit in a circle. Have them talk about some of the gifts they’ve given to other people. After they’ve shared their ideas, ask the following questions:

WHAT DOES THE WORD “SUCCESS” MEAN?

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT MIGHT CAUSE A PERSON TO BE SUCCESSFUL?

HOW WOULD A SUCCESSFUL PERSON FEEL?

HOW WOULD THESE FEELINGS AFFECT THIS PERSON MIGHT DO?

WHAT’S THE OPPOSITE OF SUCCESS?
Failure

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT MIGHT CAUSE A PERSON THINK HE’S A FAILURE?

HOW WOULD A PERSON WHO THINKS HE’S A FAILURE FEEL?

HOW WOULD THESE FEELINGS AFFECT THIS PERSON MIGHT DO?

HOW MIGHT A PERSON WHO THINKS HE’S A FAILURE BEGIN FEELING MORE SUCCESSFUL?
Suggest that they might want to consider small successes.

HOW MIGHT THIS CHANGE MIGHT AFFECT HIS FEELINGS?

Explain that during the session we’ll do the following:
• Pray and sing
• Talk about how we can feel like successes
• Draw some pictures illustrating the story

Prayer and Songs - While the children are sitting in a circle, have them share the following:
• Good things that happened in the last week.
• Situations in which a person may need God’s help
Start the prayer by saying:

Lord, we want to thank you for all the good things you do for us. In the last week, thank you for...

Go around the circle and have each child offer something good that’s happened in the last week. They should remember the things that they mentioned. Keep going around the circle until all the children have had the chance to pray as much as they want to pray. When finished, say:

Lord, we know that you help us when we need your help. We ask that you help...

Again, go around the circle and have each child offer some person or situation they’d heard mentioned earlier. Keep going around the circle until all the children have had the chance to pray as much as they want to pray. When finished, say:

Thanks for listening to us. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Then have the children pray the Lord’s Prayer by having them repeat the following:

Our Father, (have the children repeat)
who art in heaven, (have the children repeat)
Hallowed be Thy name. (have the children repeat)
Thy kingdom come. (have the children repeat)
Thy will be done (have the children repeat)
on earth as it is in heaven. (have the children repeat)
Give us this day (have the children repeat)
our daily bread. (have the children repeat)
And forgive us our debts, (have the children repeat)
as we forgive our debtors. (have the children repeat)
And lead us not into temptation, (have the children repeat)
but deliver us from evil; (have the children repeat)
For thine is the kingdom, (have the children repeat)
and the power, (have the children repeat)
and the glory, for ever. Amen. (have the children repeat)

When finished with the prayer, have the children stand and help them sing the following song:
This is the children’s song we’ll sing during the service next week.

Story - Tell the following story from the Contemporary English Version. If any children have received a Bible from the church, encourage them to bring it to Jesus Time. The children may read aloud from their Bibles. If you feel comfortable, you may act this out with small toys. Also ask the accompanying questions. Read the following:

11On his way to Jerusalem, Jesus went along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12As he was going into a village, ten men with leprosy came toward him. They stood at a distance 13and shouted, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” 14Jesus looked at them and said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.”

Ask the following:

WHO’S MENTIONED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE STORY?
Jesus

WHERE IS HE GOING?
Jerusalem

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HE’S GOING INTO A VILLAGE?
As he was going into a village, ten men with leprosy came toward him.

WHAT’S LEPROSY?
You may need to explain a little bit about the disease

HOW DO YOU THINK THOSE MEN FELT?

IF YOU HAD LEPROSY, WHAT WOULD YOU WANT?

WHO COULD HEAL THEM?

WHAT DO THEY SAY TO JESUS?
“Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”

WHAT DOES JESUS SAY?
Jesus looked at them and said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.”

HOW DO YOU THINK THEY FELT WHEN THEY HEARD JESUS SAY THIS?

Read the following:

On their way they were healed. 15When one of them discovered that he was healed, he came back, shouting praises to God. 16He bowed down at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. The man was from the country of Samaria.
Ask the following:

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THEY LEFT?
On their way they were healed.

HOW DO YOU THINK THIS MADE THE MEN FEEL?

WHAT HAPPENS TO ONE OF THEM?
When one of them discovered that he was healed, he came back, shouting praises to God.

WHY WOULD HE COME BACK?

WHAT DOES HE DO WHEN HE GETS BACK?
He bowed down at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.

FROM WHERE WAS THE MAN?
The man was from the country of Samaria. Explain the significance of being from Samaria.

Read the following:

17Jesus asked, “Weren’t ten men healed? Where are the other nine? 18Why was this foreigner the only one who came back to thank God?” 19Then Jesus told the man, “You may get up and go. Your faith has made you well.”

Ask the following:

WHEN HE COMES BACK, WHAT DOES JESUS ASK?
Jesus asked, “Weren’t ten men healed? Where are the other nine? Why was this foreigner the only one who came back to thank God?”

WHY WOULD JESUS ASK THIS?

HOW DO YOU THINK JESUS FELT?

WHAT DOES JESUS TELL THE MAN WHO CAME BACK?
Then Jesus told the man, “You may get up and go. Your faith has made you well.”

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

HOW DOES JESUS SOUND?
Happy or sad. He was positive.

WHY WAS HE POSITIVE AT THE END OF THE STORY?
He the one who came back

Ask the children to summarize the story before asking the following:

WHY WAS HE POSITIVE AT THE END OF THE STORY?
He was able to focus on the one who came back, not the nine who didn’t.

HOW CAN WE FOCUS ON THE GOOD THINGS IN OUR LIVES?

IF WE CAN FOCUS ON THE GOOD THINGS IN OUR LIVES, HOW WILL WE FEEL?

Drawing - Distribute the attached sheets and have the children draw pictures illustrating and applying the story. Encourage them to draw what they think the statement means. After about eight minutes, have the children share their drawings with the others. Save the pictures so they may be posted and scanned.


Dismissal - Close the time by reminding the children that Jesus loves them and they can love others.

Jesus Time Lesson Plan for Sunday, October 3, 2010

Scripture Passage: Luke 17:5-10

During Jesus Time, the children will learn that God has already given us all that we need.

Explain that during the session we’ll do the following:
• Pray and sing
• Talk about how we can be more generous
• Draw some pictures illustrating the story

Prayer and Songs - While the children are sitting in a circle, have them share the following:
• Good things that happened in the last week.
• Situations in which a person may need God’s help
Start the prayer by saying:
Lord, we want to thank you for all the good things you do for us. In the last week, thank you for...
